Hiroshima's first department store, Fukuya, debuts

1929 - Storefront when store was first opened

On October 1, 1929, Fukuya debuted in Hatchobori, Hiroshima City, as Hiroshima's first department store. Before the store opened at 9 AM, many city residents surrounded the building. It is said the sky in Hiroshima was a nice clear blue, as if to celebrate this opening.

When it was first established, Fukuya would be bustling with customers even before the store opened. Many customers are wearing kimono, which illustrates the social situation in early prewar Hiroshima well.
